Pierre Plée (1742-1810), maître in 1767
Plée was a celebrated ébéniste in Paris, promoted to the distinction of maître by royal edict on August 13, 1767. While his stamp suggests he may have assumed another first name, one beginning with the letter J, archival documents confirm that Pierre was his only baptismal name. This anomaly has been attributed to an inadvertent mis-lettering by the engraver who produced his stamps. Plée was likely unaware of the erroneous misspelling initially, as police documentation from the period indicates that he was completely illiterate, and he continued to use the J. Plée stamp throughout his career.
