A Fabergé gold and silver-gilt mounted guilloché enamel timepiece, Moscow, circa 1895


Circular, the convex surface of translucent purple enamel over engine-turned wavy bands, the chased leaf border within two bands of opaque white enamel, seed pearl bezel, white enamel dial, silver-gilt back and strut, struck KF and K. Fabergé in Cyrillic beneath the Imperial Warrant, 56 and 84 standards, scratched inventory number 15632

Presented to the grandfather of the present owner by Graf von Brockdorff-Ranzau, circa 1925, and thence by descent

Ulrich Karl Christian, Graf von Brockdorff-Ranzau (1869-1928) served as Ambassador of the German Reich to the USSR from 1922 to 1928.  During his tenure he secured the April 1926 Treaty of Berlin through which the two states established a relationship of neutrality and non-aggression.
