Description

A set of four late George III gilt-copper ambassadorial candlesticks

early 19th century

the removable nozzles engraved with the Royal arms, the tapering stem with foliate and lambrequin decoration on loaded baize lined mahogany bases and engraved with the Arbuthnot and Royal arms

33.5cm. high; 1ft. 1 1/4 in.

The arms are those of Arbuthnot with Lisle in pretence for Charles Arbuthnot (14 March 1767 – 18 August 1850) who married as his first wife, Marcia Mary Anne (9 July 1774 – 24 May 1806), daughter of William Clapcote-Lisle by his wife, Hester, daughter of George Cholmondeley, Viscount Malpas, eldest son of George Cholmondeley, 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley.
Charles Arbuthnot was a British diplomat and Tory politician. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1804 and 1807, these fine candlesticks were presumably part of Arbuthnot's ambassadorial plate. Interestingly, the engraving is very much in the style of Walter Jackson who worked for the best retail goldsmiths of the period, including Rundell, Bridge & Rundell. It is conceivable these candlesticks were supplied by Alexis Decaix Decaix to Rundell's and given that Arbuthnot's first wife died in 1806, the dates would seem to coincide.
