This British psychological drama was written, produced, and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The cast includes Deborah Kerr, Kathleen Byron, Sabu, David Farrar, Flora Robson, Esmond Knight, and Jean Simmons. The film is based on the 1939 novel of the same name by Rumer Godden. In a remote old palace of an Indian Raja, situated at the top of a mountain in the Himalayas, a small convent of Anglican nuns struggles to set up a school and hospital. Tensions are high amongst the nuns, not helped by their hostile environment, antique Indian erotic paintings that hang on the walls of the palace, and the handsome Englishman who is the agent of the owner. The film's cinematographer, Jack Cardiff, won an Oscar for Best Cinematography for his technical brilliance in the shooting of this film.
