Description

Circle of John Hoppner, R.A.

Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing a white dress with blue ribbons, seated in a wooded landscape

oil on canvas

unframed: 76.3 x 63.5 cm.; 30 x 25 in.

framed: 98.7 x 78.5 cm.; 38⅞ x 30⅞ in.

With Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell, London;
Jules Porgès (1839-1921);
Thence by descent until acquired by the present owner.

This portrait dates to the late 1780s or early 1790s. Previously believed to be by John Hoppner, the painting has so far eluded definitive attribution. It does bear some resemblance to the little known œuvre of John Rising (1753-1817), such as the Portrait of a lady, possibly Lady Hillingdon, sold at Replica Shoes 's New York, 13 March 1985, lot 135, or the Portrait of Hester, Dowager Countess of Charleville (d. 1789), in a private collection.1

The fine frame is French, Louis XVI, with a swag formed of bay leaves and berries supported by trompe l’œil nails (the one on the right is missing).
