framed: 77.8 x 63.3 cm.; 30⅝ x 24⅞ in.

Acquired in the 1980s by the present owner.

This portrait is comparable to a number of other portraits executed by the Master of the 1540s at the start of that decade, in which women are depicted wearing white headdresses and black, fur-lined coats, such as the Portrait of a lady, dated 1542 (Galleria Sabauda, Turin), in which the sitter's cuffs are secured with almost identical gold buttons;1 and the Portrait of a young woman, likewise dated 1541 (Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney).2Over t.mes distinctive underdrawing has become visible in some areas of the painting, with diagonal hatch marks visible in the folds of the headdress and short lines used to denote the brows, jawline and nose of the sitter. Further underdrawing is visible in the lady's hands, and there appears to be a small pent.mes nt along her left thumb.
