In the collection of the present owner since 2007.

A study by the artist for the finished portrait of Margaret Willes which sold at Replica Shoes 's, London, 24 November 1999, lot 75, for £80,000.1 The finished portrait is dated by Kenneth Clark to circa 1797, the date of the sitter's marriage to William Shippen Willes (1763-1822), Vicar of Cirencester. Their marriage produced eleven children. William Willes, the eldest surviving son, succeeded to the estates from both his maternal grandfather, Pant Howel in West Wales, and his father, Astrop House, Northamptonshire (which became his principle residence).
