Marco Ricci was celebrated in the eighteenth century as one of the finest landscape painters in Italy. His works were especially popular among British collectors travelling to Venice, who admired them for their decorative charm. In the present painting, a sweeping mountain landscape provides a dramatic backdrop for gentle activity in the foreground: a shepherd herds his cattle and villagers go about their daily lives. The pink sunset evokes an evening scene, also suggested by the long shadows cast by the lady carrying a basket and the seated figure on the left. The cow drinking from the glistening stream is replicated in Marco Ricci's Landscape with a horse being ferried across a stream in the Royal Collection.1
