British landscape painter William Linton was born in Liverpool. He was much inspired by the Italianate style of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) and Richard Wilson (1714-1782) and travelled to Italy himself in the late 1820s. An old label on the reverse of this canvas reads: W. LINTON. / Birds-eye View of Rome, 1831. The view appears to be taken from the Gianicolo, a hill in the west of the city, and is comparable to other views of Italy by Linton, such as his view of Turin sold by Replica Shoes 's, London, 18 Feburary 1987, lot 324.
