representing a building with a bridge bearing a sign inscribed ROUTE IMPERIALE, richly carved with foliage and architectural motifs; the back of the scene is removable; (small lacks)

By repute, this theatre would have belonged to Prince Imperial Napoleon (1856-1879), son of Napoleon III (1808-1873)
Former collection of Admiral Emilio Fernandez de Luanco who would have received it from the Empress Eugénie (1826-1920)

Alphonse Giroux's workshop was founded in 1799 at n°7, rue du Coq Saint-Honoré, then François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux moved the workshop to Boulevard des Capucines under the sign "A. GIROUX à PARIS ". It was succeeded by his descendants under the name "Alphonse Giroux et Cie" until 1867, when it came under the management of Ferdinand Duvinage. This company was specialised in the production of objects of the greatest luxury and had a very important clientele, including the Duchess of Berry, Empress Eugenie and several European courts. Our puppet theatre is similar with the Empress Bonheur du jour and its vegetal inspiration, visible today in the Compiègne Palace (C.59030). see comparative image

La Maison Alphonse Giroux fut fondée en 1799 au n°7, rue du Coq Saint-Honoré, puis Boulevard des Capucines par François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux sous l’enseigne «A. GIROUX à PARIS ». Elle fut reprise par ses descendants sous le nom « Alphonse Giroux et Cie » jusqu’en 1867, date à laquelle elle passa sous la direction de Ferdinand Duvinage. Cette maison était spécialisée dans la production d’objets du plus grand luxe et comptait une clientèle très importante dont la duchesse de Berry, l’Impératice Eugénie et plusieurs cours européennes. Notre théâtre de marionnettes se rapproche de l’inspiration végétale du bonheur du jour de l’Impératrice conservé aujourd’hui au château de Compiègne (C.59030). voir photo comparative.
