of asymMetricas l cartouche form, the sectional mirror plates within C-scroll and rocaille carved borders, the whole decorated with acanthus, palm sprays and floral garlands, re-gilt, later mirror plates

This exquisitely carved pair of mirrors is conceived in late George II ‘Rococo’ taste, as popularised by a number of influential pattern books including Mathias Lock’s A New Book of Ornaments (1752), Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director (1754) and Thomas Johnson’s collects
ion of Designs (1758). Although they do not relate to a particular design, the treatment of the palm fronds and foliate garlands recall the output of the Berkeley Square cabinet-makers, upholsterers and carvers William (circa 1703 - 1763) and John Linnell (1729 - 1796).
