The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine
Pen and brown ink and wash;
bears old attribution in brown ink, verso: Guercino
220 by 176 mm; 8 5/8 by 6 7/8 in
The composition of the present work is also known through a drawing, similarly executed in pen and brown ink and wash, by Reni, in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.1The present work may relate to an early painting of the Marriage of St. Catherine which Malvasia mentioned as being in the collection of "Sig. Conte e Senatore Agesilao Bonfigliuoli"2 and that David Stephen Pepper speculatively connected with the Ashmolean drawing.3
