inscriptions

'Glory to our lord the Sultan, a-Malik al-Nasir, the learned, the just'
'Glory, perpetuity, gratitude, praise, discernment, victory over enemies, splendour, magnificence, generosity, liberality, triumph, honour, nobility, high rank, wealth, happiness, favour, ease, mercy, prosperity, carefree eminence, good luck, sufficiency, God's providence, authority, rising fortune... Muhammad ibn Sadr al-Din Yusuf ibn Salah al-Din'

The design on these candlesticks, with interlacing geometric strapwork surrounding four-petalled flowerheads, recalls that of a fourteenth-century Siirt candlestick previously in the Nuhad Es-Said collection, see J.W. Allan, Islamic Metalwork: The Nuhad Es-Said Collection, London, 1982, pp.66-67, no.9. It is interesting to note that the inscriptions are also the same.
