Acquired from the above May 28, 1956 by the Bernheimer Family
The Bernheimer Family Collection of Carpets, Christie's London, February 14, 1996, lot 2

The field design of the present lot is clearly related to the in-and-out palmette designs of the Persian carpets now usually attributed to 17th century Isphahan, but here has an attractive whimsicality in the freedom of the design. The presence of floral racemes is a typical Mughal feature, whilst the unusual linked cartouche border can be seen in a miniature painting with portraits of Rao Bharah and Jassa Jam, ascribed to Bishndas, of ca. 1618-20 in the V & A, Inv.no. 124-1921 (see link) and Hali Vol.4, No.3 1982, p.244, pl.II, no 4.
