This lot has an α or 'Alpha' symbol and will be offered under the Alpha VAT scheme. If the purchase is to remain in the UK the item will be sold to you as if there was no VAT symbol, i.e. no VAT on the hammer price. If the purchase is to be exported outside the UK the item will be sold to you as if there was a dagger in the catalogue, although, subject to proof of export, no VAT will be charged on the hammer price unless you are VAT registered in the UK. Please refer to the online Conditions of Business (Studio Sale) for further VAT information.
For a ewer of similar form and size with a characteristic animal-head spout, see F. Slitine, Samson, Genie de l'Imitation, Paris, 2002, p.75. Although the twirling scroll mark on the underside of the foot of this ewer is not a typical Samson mark, the strong similarities with the published example and the knowledge that sometimes Samson works were purchased directly from their place of manufacture, without marks, leads us to infer that this is probably a Samson model.
