This fragment shows clearly that the design of the original carpet must have owed its inspiration to the more formal production of Isphahan ‘spiral vine’ carpets, see for example the ‘spiral vine’ carpet in this sale with typical white vine scrolls, and to the ‘Vase’ carpets of south east Persia, with its hints of a serrated leaf ogival trellis; however, the intense colours, soft wool and presence of juft knots makes this piece a quintessentially Khorassan weaving. Its exemplary status is evidenced by its important provenance, exhibition and publication history.
