Ex-collection Bonar Hugh Charles Sykes, M.A. (1922-99).

The grandson of prime minister Andrew Bonar Law and son of Sir Frederick Sykes, Governor of Bombay in 1927, the young Sykes spent part of his childhood in India. Following in his forefathers steps, Sykes joined the Foreign Service in 1949. With an enthusiasm for Islamic art and culture, it is possibly during his time as Head of Chancery at the British Embassy in Iran between 1961 and 1965, and his travels in the region with his friend the explorer Wilfred Thesiger, that he acquired this piece (alongside lots 177 and 180).
