Description

A PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE-VERTE FIGURES OF BOYS

PROBABLY 19TH CENTURY

each modelled with tied tufts of hair on the head, the face with a slight smiling expression and holding a baluster-form vase, wearing a dudou painted in the center with a Shou character within a Fu-character shaped reserve, one side with a smaller boy clinging to the waist, standing atop a rectangular base painted with molded lotus petals, the back with a pierced aperture

height 12 7/8 in.; 32.7 cm

There has been much debate about the dating of these types of figures of boys, which likely stems from the varying quality of enameling and modelling on surviving examples. Some examples demonstrate a high level of competency in the decoration and modelling, while others appear more loose and cursory. For further discussions on the dating of these types of figures of boys, see William R. Sargent, Treasures of Chinese Export Art from the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem 2012, cat. no. 265.  A pair of boys, similar to the current examples but without the smaller boy clinging at the waist, is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts, and illustrated in the catalogue entry.
