Description

A MOTTAHEDEH 'ORANGE FITZHUGH' AMERICAN MARKET PART-DINNER SERVICE

CIRCA 1976

after a Chinese Export pattern, printed and color-filled with a central large eagle holding a ribbon in its mouth bearing the motto 'E/ PLURIBUS/ UNUM', comprising: two large two-handled oval tureens, covers, and stands; four circular bottle coolers; and seventy plates, diameter 10 in., 25.5 cm, printed factory marks. 80 pieces.

Few examples of Chinese Export 'orange Fitzhugh' American-market dinner wares appear to survive, and of these some are a variant type with gilt monograms in place of the red stripes on the shield. A tureen and stand in this pattern, though painted with an eagle holding a shield bearing en grisaille flowers, was in the Collection of Roy and Ruth Nutt sold at Replica Shoes 's New York, 23 January, 2015, lot 173; an oval platter from the private Collection of Elinor Gordon was sold, Replica Shoes 's New York, 23 January, 2010, lot 112; and a large oval warming platter, the property of the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, was sold, Replica Shoes 's New York, 4 April, 2007, lot 243.
