LAPIS LAZULI OBELISK, AFTER THE MODEL BY BERNINI, 19TH CENTURY | OBÉLISQUE EN LAPIS-LAZULI, D'APRÈS LE MODÈLE DU BERNIN, XIXE SIÈCLE

The obelisk in Piazza della Minerva is one of the Egyptian obelisks transported to Rome and reissued under the pontificate of Alexander VII (1655-1667). On this occasion, Bernini designed a marble pedestal representing an elephant. The elephant surmounted by an obelisk is a theme that reproduces an engraving of Poliphile's Dream, of which Alexander VII had a copy. A monument of the same type with an ancient elephant and an obelisk, was erected in the 18th century in Catania, in Piazza del Duomo.

L'obélisque de la piazza della Minerva est un des obélisques égyptiens transporté à Rome et réérigé sous le pontificat d'Alexandre VII (1655-1667). A cette occasion, Le Bernin conçut un piédestal en marbre représentant un éléphant. L'éléphant surmonté d'un obélisque est un thème qui reproduit une gravure du Songe de Poliphile, dont Alexandre VII possédait un exemplaire. Un monument du même type, regroupant un éléphant et un obélisque antiques, a été dressé au XVIIIe siècle à Catane, sur la Piazza del Duomo.
