A SET OF TWELVE ITALIAN CARVED GILTWOOD NEO-CLASSICAL CHAIRS, ROMAN, LATE 18TH CENTURY

in the antique manner, each with an inward curved trapezoid shaped padded back, above a padded seat, the seat-rail carved with husks, on tapering fluted front legs terminating in toupie feet, on rear sabre legs, the frame carved with beading

The carving on these chairs relates them to two important suites of chairs of Roman origin, a set which was made for the Salottino del Ritratti at Palazzo Barberini and a set from the Drawing Room at Ickworth in Sufflok, (illustrated and discussed by Mario Tavella `A set of Roman neo-classical armchairs at Ickworth' Apollo, April, 2000, pp. 49-53, where the Barberini chairs are shown in situ in fig. 11.)
An identical set is illustrated by Roberto Valeriani in his book on Palazzo Torlonia, see page 107.
A related pair of sofas with similarly carved seat-rails was sold as lots 213 and 214, in these Rooms, 9th December 1994.
