This group of a Drunken Bacchus is directly inspired by a composition of the 16th century Florentine sculptor known as the Master of the Unruly Children, who has been tentatively identified as Sandro di Lorenzo di Smeraldo (1483-c.1554). Often paired with a pendant of a Sea God, this terracotta depicts a lascivious Bacchus holding a bunch of grapes and a cup, while lying on a barrel from which wine flows to the ground.
A very similar piece was part of the collects ion of Karl Lagerfeld (sold in Monaco, 29 April 2000, lot 218). Furthermore, an identical pair in bronze was owned by the French politician Adolphe Thiers, now in the Louvre (inv. nos. TH97 and TH98).

Ce Bacchus s’inspire direct.mes nt de la composition du sculpteur florentin du XVIe siècle connu sous le nom du Maître des Enfants turbulents, dont l’identité serait probablement celle de Sandro di Lorenzo di Smeraldo (1483- c.1554). Cette terre cuite, originellement pensée pour être accompagnée d’un pendant symétrique représentant un Dieu marin, figure un Bacchus lascif, dans ses mains une grappe de raisin ainsi qu’une coupe, et allongé sur un tonneau dont le vin s’écoule sur le sol.
Un exemplaire très proche a fait partie de la collects ion de Karl Lagerfeld (sa vente, Monaco, 29 avril 2000, lot 218). Par ailleurs, une paire identique en bronze ayant appartenu à la collects ion d’Adolphe Thiers est aujourd’hui conservée au Musée du Louvre (inv. n° TH97 et TH98).
