Description

Northern Italian, probably 17th century

Hardstone Bust of a Woman

hardstone, within a later gem-set pin mount

bust: 19.3mm., 0.76in.

overall: 100mm., 3.95in.

This hardstone bust is stylistically reminiscent of northern Italian gem carving in the early 17th century; compare a larger cameo with a bust of Cleopatra attributed to Ottavio Miseroni (1568-1624), illustrated in Scarisbrick, op. cit., and another similar bust of a woman in the Royal Collection.
