Of youthful form and proud demeanor, the stylized female figure is supported on a two-legged stool and holds a small puppy to her chest, while she grasps a small knopped bowl over the left shoulder. These small accoutrements emphasize the female's role as a caregiver and provider.
She is modeled and adorned in a highly similar fashion to the preceding lot (lot 25), the male figure, showing her meditative elongated face, a generous array of earrings and graduated necklaces, and painted overall with striped body designs. The figures are likely from the same workshop and possibly form a marriage or sibling pair.
The Ixtlán del Río style from Nayarit is known for the expressive yet stylized quality of its figures, which were an inspiration to mid-20th century artists such as Diego Rivera and the Surrealist Max Ernst.
