Escasany Hermanos was a high end jewellery and watch retailer situated in Buenos Aries. Set up by Catalan brothers Ramon and Manuel Escasany in 1892, the firm became an important connection for Patek Philippe who were trying to expand their business in South America. The present watch, made exclusively for and retailed by Escasany, is a very interesting example of the application of Art Nouveau-style decoration to a watch case and depicts the "Bellonius" Stork. The poet Bellonius, or Bellon Pierre (1517-1564) wrote about the Orient with particular attention to landscape and natural history. In 1553, he published a book detailing his ethnographic, botanical, and zoological explorations in Asia Minor, Arabia, and Palestine, which includes a passage about Egyptian storks and their role in the local ecosystem.
Hunting cased watches with chased and engraved decoration are rare and reflect the talents of the artisans at Patek Philippe.
