Replica Shoes 's New York, 19 April 2001, lots 532 & 533
Gordon Castle was the primary seat of the Dukes of Gordon, until the line became extinct upon the death of the 5th Duke in 1836. The design of these chairs is extremely similar to a drawing for a 'cabriole armchair' supplied by Gillows to Robert Peel in 1786 (Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, Woodbridge 2008, p.181 pl.146).
