Joining forces with L'EPEE who has over 175 years of watchmaking, MB&F conceptualized the blueprints for the present clock, while L'EPEE dedicated its meticulous movements. The result is the exceptional Balthazar, a manifestation of futuristic design and traditional watchmaking. Inspired by fictional robots such as HAL 9000, C-3PO and Dr. Who's K-9, Balthazar was given a rather ancient name. Along with Melchior and Caspar, he was one of the three wise men from biblical lore who visited Jesus at his birth.
Balthazar expresses a rather pleasant face in the front, with two 20-seconds retrograde displays in his eyes, sweeping from left to right, as if he is analyzing the area in front of him. Recording the time are the slow jumping hours and sweeping minutes on his chest, while exhibiting on his waist is a power reserve of 35 days once fully wound. Rotating Balthazar backwards reveals his colder personality, replacing the pleasant face with a robotic skull. His body now displays a double hemisphere moon phase.
Founded in 2005 by Maximilian Büsser, MB&F is a contemporary watchmaking brand where Büsser had chosen to take a significantly idiosyncratic path amongst his peers within the industry. Whilst referring themselves as the world’s first-ever horological concept factory, MB&F specializes in creating 3-D kinetic art by deconstructing traditional watchmaking. Immediately proven to be a huge success after releasing their first watch, HM1, from the Horological Machines collection in 2007, a collection of asymmetrical watches that had drawn inspiration from futuristic designs during Maximilian Büsser's childhood emerged. MB&F had continued to create nine more watches for the Horological Machines. With the introduction of each watch from the collection leading the brand to more and more success, MB&F shortly launched another series of watches known as the Legacy Machines in 2011. Legacy Machines is a collection that features round case watches but with an aim to reinterpreting complications from the nineteenth century.
Whilst having great success with its wristwatches, MB&F also expanded its production into Performance Art and Co-creations, which are interesting installations that would correspond to horological movements such as clocks and musical boxes.
A brand that has consistently been pushing the boundaries of traditional horology, MB&F’s products have always been intriguing and captivating for all five senses. While it is impossible to assemble the entire MB&F collection, Replica Shoes ’s is proud to present five amazing pieces from the brand, each of them undoubtably capturing the attention of all collectors.
