QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD

清康熙 五彩麻姑獻壽圖大盤


finely painted to the centre with a spotted deer pulling a cart holding an iron-red baluster vase with lotus leaf cover, accompanied by Magu holding a ruyi-sceptre followed by a female attendant carrying a staff burdened with scrolls tied with ribbons, with iron-red bats flying above, all within a double underglaze-blue line repeated on the rim, the exterior painted with multiple bands of stylised shou characters, the base with an apocryphal Chenghua mark in underglaze blue within a double-circle

Dishes decorated with this particular subject depicting the eternally young and beautiful Goddess Magu on her carriage bearing birthday offerings were made for birthday celebrations wishing the owner longevity and good fortune, hence they are also known as 'longevity' or 'birthday' dishes. 


A pair of similar dishes were sold in our rooms in London, 11th November 2004, lot 620. Compare also with an example sold in Christie's New York, 15th September 2011, lot 1493, and a more recent example sold in Christie's New York, 12th September 2019, lot 734. Dishes of this type are also in several museum collections. See, for instance, a dish of the same type, illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, p. 112, cat. no. 102. A similar dish depicting Magu offering birthday congratulations in the collection of the Shanghai Museum, is illustrated in Chûgoku tôji zenshû, vol. 21, Kyoto, 1981, pl. 59 and is also illustrated in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Shanghai, 1996, p. 145, pl. 98.
