This jar is remarkable for its freely painted floral design that envelops the whole body without division into horizontal zones and borders, and is also unusual in shape. Similarly conceived painted designs are sometimes seen on tall Cizhou meiping bottles; for four examples in Japanese collections, painted with overall lotus scrolls, see Yutaka Mino, Freedom of Clay and Brush through Seven Centuries in Northern China.
