Aesthetically playful yet conceptually rigorous, Michael Craig Martin’s seminal oeuvre is characterized by the perceptual tension between object, representation, and language. Sandal from 1984 emerges from his influential series of steel forms that describe everyday objects and appear like line drawings in the air. His work can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, among others.
