« Pendant les travaux, je ne cessais de voir un jeune Américain qui venait de s’installer dans l’immeuble. […] C’était Harold Stevenson, d’Idabel en Oklahoma. Ce garçon exquis, plein de prévenances, était un grand charmeur. Il avait des yeux de myosotis, un teint de rose et des lèvres purpurines ; c’était un être délicieux. Il m’avoua être peintre et m’invita dans son atelier […] Comment deviner que ce petit homme si fluet, si délicat, si féminin, serait un si grand peintre ? Exaltée par cette découverte, je lui proposai une exposition dans les plus brefs délais, et pour commencer lui demandai aussi de faire mon portrait. Il peignit mon visage sur quatre panneaux comme un puzzle. »
