Description
Winston S. Churchill
Marlborough: His Life and Times. New York: Charles Scribners Sons, 1933-1938
6 volumes, 8vo. Illustrated throughout with portraits, maps, plans. Original green cloth, original unclipped first state pictorially printed dust jackets and publisher’s card slipcases (where issued); jackets of Volumes I and II toned, some chipping to edges, loss of approximately one-inch along the foot of Volume II spine panel, jackets of Volumes III and IV with minor loss at the spine heads repaired on verso with archival paper, closed triangular tear to the rear panel of Volume III, faint and scattered foxing to Volume IV, slipcases lightly scuffed and just separating in one or two instances.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION IN FIRST-STATE DUST JACKETS
Marlborough was published as a somewhat less lavish 6-volume set in the U.S., though the contents of both editions are identical. The jacketing of the American edition was also quite piecemeal and not uniform. This is a handsome set of the American edition, with all volumes in their scarce, correct first-state jackets, as issued, with the original printed slipcases. Volumes I and II are in white dust jackets printed green and are slipcased as a set; as are Volumes III and IV. Volume V is in its unique off-white dust jacket printed red and black. Volume VI is in the familiar blue and gold dust jacket that made its first appearance here, before Scribner subsequently rewrapped the entire set in this jacket design uniformly.
