Description

POPE, ALEXANDER

ENSAIO SOBRE O HOMEN... TRADUZIDO VERSO POR VERSO POR FRANCISCO BENTO MARIA TARGINI. LONDON: C. WHITTINGHAM, 1819

3 volumes, 4to (344 x 257mm.), LARGE PAPER COPY, half-titles, volume 1: lithographed frontispiece of the translator by G.F. de Queiroz, printed dedication to King Joaô VI, parallel text in English and Portuguese, 3 plates; volume 2: frontispiece; volume 3: frontispiece; contemporary burgundy velvet bindings with the Portuguese royal arms gilt on covers, black morocco lettering-pieces on spines, gilt edges, lacking portrait of Pope, some offsetting from plates, endleaves slightly foxed, bindings slightly rubbed at edges, joints rubbed and slightly cracked

A fine set, presumably a presentation copy, of Targini's translation and extensive commentary on Pope's Essay on Man (1733-1734). He had also translated Kant and Paradise Lost into Portuguese. The printing of this translation in London, at a time when Portugal and Great Britain were close allies, also coincided with the exile of the Portuguese court to Brazil.
