A FIRMAN BEARING THE TUGHRA OF SULTAN MAHMUD II (R.1808-39), TURKEY, ISTANBUL, DATED 1232 AH/1817 AD


Ottoman Turkish manuscript on watermarked paper, 8 lines to the page, written in diwani script in alternating black and light blue ink, sprinkled in gold, gold dots and cintamani motifs, surmounted by a large tughra outlined in gold


78.8 by 54cm.

The paper bears two watermarks, the tre lune and the initial GFA, surmounted by an eagle. Another tughra, also dated to the reign of Murad II and bearing similar gold cintamani motif on the surface was sold in these rooms, 24 April 2013, lot 46.

The firman appoints a certain Habibe Hatun, the mother of Mehmed Shakir, a secretary in the Chief Accounting Officer (Bash Muhasebe Kalemi), to the duty of sweeping (ferashet) of a quarter of a kirat of the tomb of the Prophet in Medina. The appointment came about following the death of the previous encumbent of the office, a certain Sheyh Efendi ibn Mustafa Efendi and the petition of Habibe Hatun for the position to Hafiz Isa Agha, the Darüssaade Ağasi (Chief Black Eunuch) and overseer of the Pious Foundations of the Two Holy Places.
