the faceted watered-steel barrel overlaid and inlaid with silver and gold in a design of split-palmettes, raised sighting aperture, stock with ivory butt and decorated with openwork mother of pearl panels and cintamani-shaped ivory motifs, two hooks to side
132cm.
Ex-collection Le Page, Paris.
For more information on the Le Page family, see footnote to lot 452.
This fine rampart gun is comparable to a rifle in the Dresden armoury, inv. no.Y 0311, which was captured as booty following the battle of Vienna in 1683 and later gifted to the Elector Johann Georg III, helping to date this type of weapon (Schuckelt 2010, pp.204-5, no.186). The quality of the this rife's barrel is particularly fine, with silver and gold-inlaid embellishments to the breech and muzzle.
