Description

A gold and enamel snuff box in 18th century taste

oval, decorated with concentric bands of translucent blue enamel and gold diaperwork and interlaced engine-turning, French prestige marks including maker's mark purporting to be that of Ange-Joseph Aubert, charge and discharge marks of J.J. Prévost, date letters B & C, the rim engraved: George A Paris, the rim numbered: 140

6.4cm., 2 1/2 in. wide

The idea of concentric alternating engine-turned gold and blue enamel bands seems to originate in Paris in the 1740's, as seen in an example made in 1740 by one of the most revered Parisian bijoutiers, Jean Ducrollay, made in 1740 shows (Christie's, 11 November 1935).
