A member of the Royal Academy, Stanley Thorogood trained at Brighton School of Art and later taught in Stoke-on-Trent before becoming Director of Camberwell Art School in London. As exemplified by the present relief, Thorogood pursued an interest in romanticised depictions of medieval knights and equestrian subjects.
