Inventory, 1949, 'A William and Mary walnut table on spiral column, with pierced and carved shaped basket top, inlaid and dated 1757' in the Drawing Room
Layette trays or baskets were usually presented to a family for the arrival of a new-born baby or for displaying the goods needed for one. Often pierced, they were usually made of wicker, sometimes beadwork or carved wood or in the grandest houses they could be of silver. The ownership initials suggest that the present lot may have been given to a newly married couple in anticipation of future healthy off-spring.
