2 vols., folio (13 5/8 x 8 1/4 in.; 346 x 210). Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Melchior Küsell after Matthaeus Merian, 2 letterpress titles printed in red and black, text in double columns, 137 engraved plates after Matthaeus Merian; gathering 3F in vol. I misbound after 3H. Expertly bound to style in half 18th century russia over contemporary paper boards, spines with raised bands in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, red stained edges.
The second edition of this important 17th-century survey of the botanical world
The first edition of this work was published in Frankfurt in 1662, and titled Dendrographiae sive Historiae Naturalis de Arboribus et Fructibus. The present edition was published by Eckebrecht after he had acquired the complete set of the original printing plates for the 1662 edition. These were reprinted, and to them were added the second edition of the text.
