Description
The Property of a Gentleman
[EMERSON, RALPH WALD]
The Offering. Cambridge: Hilliard & Brown, 1829
16mo. 4 lithographed plates by John Pendleton (2nd state of frontispiece); some foxing. Original red roan binding, spine gilt-lettered, all edges gilt; minor rubbing and soiling, upper joint split. In custom clamshell case.
First edition, Emerson's first book appearance
This literary annual contains Emerson’s poem “Fame,” his prose sketch “An Extract . . .” (and, possibly by him, the poem “William Rufus and the Jew”); it contains Oliver Wendell Holmes’ two poems, “The Lover’s Return” and “Burial of a Maiden at Sea.”
These are the first appearances in print of both authors; fewer than half-a-dozen copies seem to be known.
