4to (12 3/4 x 9 7/8 in.; 324 x 251 mm). Original blue buckram, red morocco gilt lettering-piece on spine; spine ends rubbed and worn, lettering-piece chipped at upper edge. Half blue morocco gilt slipcase.
First edition. One of 100 copies for the author's personal distribution. Inscribed by Adams on the half-title, "For John L. Stewart, with the regards of Henry Adams, March 19, 1907." Stewart was a professor at Swathmore and member of the History Club at the University of Pennsylvania.
