KIPLING, RUDYARD
Letters of Marque. Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co., 1891
8vo, first edition, one of 1,000 copies, advertisements at the beginning and end, original red and blue cloth boards lettered in gilt, preserved in matching red cloth folding box, upper hinge partially broken, some slight bubbling and spotting to cloth, some edge-wear
This first edition, apparently published without Kipling's permission was suppressed on the author's orders and 900 copies (of 1,000 in total) were allegedly destroyed, although Kipling's most recent bibliographer David Alan Richards believes this figure is somewhat exaggerated. This copy, like almost all others known, has a publisher's purple stamp on the front endpaper recording the date of dispatch from the publisher's premises (this copy with the earliest known, "Issued 5. Oct. 91")
