Description
A MINIATURE CONCERTINA ALBUM OF CALLIGRAPHY, COPIED BY SAYYID GOLESTANEH AND ‘ABD AL-MAJID TALIQANI, PERSIA, DATED 1117 AH/1705-06 AD AND 1309 AH/1891-92 AD
Persian manuscript on paper, 24 album pages bound in concertina form, each with a text panel written in shikasteh in black ink within clouds against a gold ground decorated with polychrome flowers, ruled in gold, in lacquer binding decorated with flower scrolls and vine leaves, one board detached
10.4 by 7cm.
Most of the album pages are signed Sayyid Golestaneh and dated 1309 AH/1891-92 AD. Other album pages bear the name of ‘Abd al-Majid Taliqani’s, among which three have the date of 1117 AH (1705-06 AD). The scribe Sayyid ‘Ali Akbar Golestaneh (1858-1901), titled Ihtisham al-Sadat, was born in Isfahan, but travelled frequently and died in Tehran. He was a well-known calligrapher of nasta’liq and shikasteh. His recorded work includes and album prepared for Muzaffar al-Din Shah in the Gulistan Palace Library, copied in Tehran and dated 1317 AH/1899-1900 AD, as well as many calligraphic pages, one dated 1318 AH/1900-01 (M. Bayani, ahval va athar-e khosh-navisan, nasta’liq navisan, vol.2, 1346 sh, pp.437-8). This is the earliest recorded work by him.
