Description

Megalodon Shark Tooth

Otodus megalodon

Miocene Epoch (approx. 25-5.3 million years ago)

Ashepoo River, Colleton Co., South Carolina

This incredibly well preserved, 5-inch-long tooth collected from the Ashepoo River in South Carolina belonged to Otodus megalodon, a giant prehistoric shark armed with huge, serrated, razor-sharp teeth like the one seen here. The largest predatory shark ever to have lived, adult megalodon weighed between 40,000 and 120,000 pounds and could reach up to 60 feet in length, more than three times the length of its closest living relative, the great white shark. With a name meaning “big tooth” and a bite force double that of Tyrannosaurus rex, megalodon is considered one of the greatest apex predators of all time.
