Calcite and Amethyst
Artigas, Artigas Department, Uruguay
This multigenerational specimen from Artigas, Uruguay represents millions of years of geological transformation. The matrix is composed of dark purple, glittering amethyst crystals that form the foundation of the piece. At its center sits a large calcite crystal, coated by a later generation of shimmering amethyst and delicately speckled with fine black goethite. Rising from the matrix are two later generation calcite growths: a yellow scalenohedral crystal and a tall, slender stem encrusted with sparkling amethyst crystals, giving the specimen an impressive stature and a distinctly sculptural presence. While amethyst and calcite occur widely around the world, their union here, expressed through a complex interplay of multigenerational growth and an unusually sculptural arrangement, is uncommon. Its impressive scale and compositional harmony make it an excellent example of its kind.
