Catalogue Note

The term palampore, which is derived from the Persian and Hindi words for bedcover or palangposh, would usually only consist of a single chintz panel. In the present examples, one textile was converted into a quilt for the bed and the other most probably as a head-frame. The European family whose crest features throughout would have needed the extra padding to keep warm in a colder climate. This bears witness to the tremendous influence of such textiles on households and the subsequent production of textiles in Europe.
