Catalogue Note
The coat-of-arms at the centre of this palampore indicates that it was commissioned for a European owner. As such textiles were particularly popular amidst Dutch patrons, it is possible that this is for where it was intended. A palampore also with a coat-of-arms at its centre is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. IS.13-1976. For further examples see R. Crill, Indian textiles for the West, V&A Publishing, London, 2008.
