Catalogue Note
The leather inscription reads 'Glory to our lord, the Sultan, Abi 'Abdallah the one asking for help from God' which should refer to the last ruler of Granada, Abu 'Abdallah Muhammad XII (c.1460-c.1533). Also known as Boabdil, he was the twenty-second and last Nasrid ruler of the Emirate of Granada. The last Muslim territory in the Peninsula, Granada was ruled by Boabdil from 1482 until he was defeated by Castille in 1492, the final act of the Christian Reconquista. Boabdil fled into exile to Morocco where he died forty years later.
