Famed as one of the big three gemstones of the world, emeralds have been treasured as the green jewel of choice alongside rubies and sapphires. Some of the oldest emeralds are 2.97 billion years old – and has seen legendary patrons such as Cleopatra, who was well-known for her infatuation towards emeralds. Emeralds typically have eye-visible inclusions, akin to birthmarks from nature. To find emeralds that are clean within is extremely rare, and very valuable. Such is the case for the emeralds in Lot 1709, recently discovered as ‘untreated, fissure-free’ emeralds. These untreated emeralds exhibit exceptional claritys and transparency, free from inclusions. This is a new type of emerald discovered in Brazil, reminiscent to the highly sought after Paraíba tourmaline and is just as rare. The fine claritys of the gem is a true gift from nature, and Gübelin has certified the jewels of Lot 1709 as a ‘untreated, fissure-free’ emerald. Rarely offered at auction, it will be an exciting opportunity for gem collects ors to add these unique jewels to their fine collects ion.
