Description
- Cinnabar
comprising one small rectangular box and cover carved with two figures in a landscape; one rectangular box and cover carved with a scholar accompanied by his attendant carrying a qin; one circular box and cover carved with a traveler astride a donkey followed by an attendant; and an enameled brass bookend inset with a carved cinnabar lacquer 'floral' panel surrounded by the 'Eight Daoist Emblems' (7)

Collection of Charles Hayes Brown (1859-1910), San Francisco, California, and thence by descent.
Condition
The rectangular boxes and covers with expected signs of age and use, including minor lifting and cracks to the lacquer in some areas, and small losses to the corners and rims (some restored). The circular lacquer box in mostly good condition but with minor losses to the carved lacquer (e.g., the donkey's ears) and the interior and base re-lacquered black. The bookend with minor flakes to the enamels, and the lacquer slightly lifting from the support (still stable).
